What are Air Foods?

Low-calorie snacks called "air foods" generally satisfy our stomachs but provide little nutrition. Consider diet soda, popcorn, rice cakes, and celery sticks.

I don't wish to disparage aerated foods.

They do, in fact, have a place, just like all foods. But I also want to emphasize how relying on certain meals can be harmful! I firmly believe in honoring my hunger, which means eating as soon as I start to feel hungry, but I can't always predict when it will happen or whether it will fit with "life," for instance, when brunch is at 11 am but you're hungry at 9:30 am or dinner with friends is at 8:30 pm but you're hungry at 7 pm. If we anticipate eating soon but need something light to tide us over for an hour or two, air foods are fantastic.

BUT! What happens if it will be two or three hours until we eat again and we are genuinely extremely hungry? If we ignore our hunger or simply numb it with artificial food, it will return soon, leaving us angry or ashamed that we felt hungry again so soon. We've learned to pathologize hunger, yet if all we've done to satisfy it is eat a bag of popcorn, it makes sense that hunger would return sooner than if we'd chosen a truly filling snack.

The industry for low-calorie snacks is flourishing, and it benefits from our desire to limit our calorie intake in an effort to stay thin and "healthy." However, do low-calorie snacks like aerated meals genuinely achieve this goal, or do they only temporarily quell our hunger and encourage us to eat more later on?

This is yet another factor contributing to my frustration with the government's 100-calorie snack initiative. What message is this sending to young people? that we should evaluate a food item's calorie count in relation to how healthy it is? Snacks under 100 calories don't typically fill you up, and nuts have a different nutritional profile than sweets. I'm not sure if this is the right course of action.

In conclusion, aerated foods aren't always "bad," and who doesn't enjoy the salty-sweet crunch of movie popcorn? Having said that, be wary of stuffing yourself with light foods because they don't keep us full for very long.

I personally aim to include snacks with a balance of protein and carbohydrates, or fat and carbohydrates, in my daily life because I think that they are typically the most satiating and enjoyable. For instance, yogurt with berries and nut butter, or toast with peanut butter and banana. This is by no means a rule, but it's okay if I see a cake or brownie and decide to eat it because I feel like it.
